Adidas and Stepn announced an upcoming drop, allowing users to experience NFTs in the physical world.
The initiative marked the third phase of a year-long Web3 partnership between the companies.
The drop will launch this month with four ruffles between December 13 and 17.
Web3 social-lifestyle app Stepn and Adidas announced Thursday that they will release a “limited-edition drop” of physical shoes as part of their ongoing mission to push innovation boundaries in Web3 and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Stepn’s year-long partnership with the shoe and sports apparel giant began with the launch of a limited collection of generative NFT sneakers in April 2024, a week after the Solana-based move-to-earn app airdropped 100 million “FSL points (worth $30 million in GMT tokens) to users. Stepn said the business tie-up would lead to further NFT drops and physical, wearable items in the future.
According to a press release on December 5, Stepn and Adidas are exploring the third chapter of their long-running partnership with an exclusive drop of 1,200 co-branded Adidas Ultraboost 5 running shoes later this month.
“By combining digital and physical experiences, this partnership underscores the growing impact of STEPN GO, not just as a fitness app but as a pioneer in redefining possibilities in the Web3 space,” The statement read.
The companies said they will conduct four raffles to select winners for the limited-edition sneakers between December 13 and December 17. The winners will be able to claim their shoes in January next year after a three-week trading period that would allow everyone to buy tickets in the secondary market.
While everyone is welcome to participate in the drop through a contest on X (formerly Twitter) and two raffles exclusively open to the ALTS by Adidas and STEPN Apps communities, the statement clarified that holders of the STEPN GO x Adidas Genesis NFT collection, which launched in April, would be given an “advantage.”
STEPN by Find Satoshi Lab (FSL) CEO Shiti Manghani lauded the development as a “defining moment” in the company’s partnership with Adidas.
“We’ve moved from digital collectibles to tangible products that people can wear, showing just how far the Web3 space has evolved. This collaboration demonstrates the potential of merging fitness, digital assets, and real-world products.” Manghani stated.
Commenting on the partnership, Adidas Vice President Erika Wykes-Sneyd reiterated that the upcoming sneaker collection brought a fresh perspective on fitness engagement.
“This collaboration not only brings a fresh way to engage with fitness but also introduces rewarding experiences that push the boundaries of what’s possible in both the physical and digital worlds,” Wykes-Sneyd noted.
The development underscored how the two companies are betting big on Web3 amid growing institutional interest in blockchain technology.
Since 2021, Stepn has established itself as an innovative pioneer in the move-to-earn Web3 niche, amassing over 5.7 million registered users who are incentivized to exercise. The app allows users to acquire a virtual Sneaker NFT and earn rewards through walking, jogging, and running.
In addition to tapping prolific brands like Adidas, ASICS, Atlético De Madrid, and Steve Aoki for mainstream Web3 initiatives, Stepn is on a mission to onboard millions of users to the digital asset sphere through the STEPN GO, which launched in public beta in September 2024. The crypto platform allows users to lend their sneakers to friends, share energy and earnings, and onboard newbies into Web3 without the need for a wallet, positioning it to penetrate a wider audience and foster community-driven innovation.
Like Stepn, Adidas’ initial foray into the Web3 landscape began in 2021 with the “Into the Metaverse” initiative. This initiative featured an exclusive NFT of digital and physical products in partnership with notable industry names, including the Bored Ape Yacht Club, the community behind the Punk’s Comic, and G Money.
The endeavor garnered massive global attention, prompting the Herzogenaurach, Germany-based apparel giant, to set up the Three Stripes Studio in 2022. Reaffirming its commitment to the nascent industry, the company later launched three pivotal platforms: the Adidas COLLECT and ALTS by Adidas. While COLLECT is the company’s centralized hub for its Web3 initiatives, ALTS by Adidas serves as its genesis NFT, allowing users to create unique avatars and unlock exclusive access to collectibles and experiences.
Adidas has also forged crypto-related Web3 business tie-ups with Coinbase and Bugatti.
